Went to work the other night and was met by two contrasting bikes.
One I can only assume it’s heavy on the feet to ride on the road.
On the stairs landing is a night shift colleague’s bike.
The tyres on the one at the bottom of the stairs are about three times wider than the one up the stairs.
I don’t know what it is but it looks awful for a city bike in that where we are at work is all city roads.

That fat tire bike is a relatively new trend in “mountain biking” whatever you take that to be. The big tires work especially well on snow and sand, of course. Around here (New England) people ride them on hard-packed snow trails, like snowmobile trails, of which there are many, many miles connecting the whole state and then some.
That one looks equipped for overnight touring, in the wilderness. Which is awesome. Like overlanding, but on a bike. Or, backpacking, but with wheels. I bet that guy is more interesting to talk to than the road bike owner, just on his apparent appetite for adventure. But then, you never know.

fat bikes are great for city riding (if you ride like an asshole like me and hop curbs and take stairs like nobodies business)
also they tend to have a pretty light gearing so they’re actually pretty light on the feet... you wont be setting any speed records tho

You sure that fat bike isn’t powered? It appears to be a hub motor on the rear wheel, battery pack in the bag in the frame and the right hand grip looks a lot like a twist style throttle. If that was the case that would make a sweet city cruiser. You could bomb curbs and stairs like they weren’t even there!

Ye’, but here in Old England even when the Lake District is only a few miles away (about 15 really) our city being the largest in the whole county (okay, it’s the only city in Cumbria) is all asphalt roads with very little in the way of country biking until you go several miles outside the city.
The road bike is owned by an old mildly racist, sexist misogynist who won’t do anything unless he benefits the most from it. So ye’, I guess your right. Lol.

It’s been a few years since I was on a bike but remember off road tyres being more heavy under foot to pedal than road tyres.
It just looks OTT.

oh it is ott... and for sure compared to road tires it’ll be harder going
but itty bitty gearing works miracles :)
(but it is fun being able to cycle pretty much anywhere with impunity)

It didn’t appear to be. No other cables other than gear and brakes going to the rear.
I’ll have a closer look if it’s there next Monday.

I had that with my old Diamond Back.
I hated the new stuff like front and rear suspension and GripShift gear changes. I liked the RapidFire gears a lot, but all the suspension was in my legs. I had a go a while back on a friend’s Marin, and even with the suspension locked out, I still felt like the bike was rocking back and forth under heavy pedalling which meant I couldn’t get the speed up that I used to.
I used to race everywhere.

Yeah that’s the awesome thing about hub motors. They sit right inside the wheel and don’t require you to run extra chain or mount a motor on the frame. I’d bet that’s what it is. Sweet ride either way!

It almost certainly is an e-bike. The massive silver cylinder on the top tube is a popular battery pack for DIY e-bike builders.

I bet you’re right, good eye!

Also, there are too many cables coming from the handlebars for one of them not to be controlling that motor.

I just noticed that tank thing mounted to the top tube. I wonder if that’s just more batteries?

Battery on top tube gives it away as well, definitely powered.
